sundial

A simple time-keeping instrument consisting of a shadow stick (or gnomon) and a dial on which the shadow cast by the Sun falls. The dial is graduated in hours. A sundial measures apparent solar time. There are many different types of design for sundials of varying degrees of sophistication.
